Yoga is emerging in Cambodia, and Siem Reap is a good place to practice and also enjoy the wonderful hospitality and genuine kindness of people of Cambodia and the magnificent Angkor temples.

Volunteers and Teachers get she same benefits, with exception of a monthly pay for teachers.

The differences between a teacher and a volunteer are explained here:

  • certifications: teachers have completed standard and for some, advanced certifications
  • experience: teachers have successfully taught in professional yoga studios/retreats/ashrams and are able to provide references
  • depth of knowledge: teachers are expert in on or more fields (flying yoga, vinyassa,…) but have practiced and can teach most common yoga branches/variations to beginners
  • reputation: teachers have built-up a reputation in the community thanks to their values, integrity, passion and skills
  • TTC and retreats: experienced teachers can teach TTCs, organize and run focused retreats

Volunteering is the best path towards becoming a professional Yoga instructor, learning along with seasoned teachers in an environment dedicated to Yoga.

Our focus remains to provide the best possible experience to our customers, and you, as a teacher or volunteer, are integral part of providing that experience.

As a customer, you would understand that we look for volunteers and teachers who demonstrate the qualities and talent to best teach you Yoga in all its subtleties.

Volunteers, Karma yogis and yoginis

Here are the benefits for a volunteer tenure at Blue Indigo:

  • full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner) just like guests
  • accommodation with attached restrooms/toilet in fan cottage or room. You will likely share a 2 person fan cottage with a same-gender yoga volunteer or teacher. Just like guests.
  • access to all classes based on your schedule
  • Involved in outings (except Angkor temples where ticket fees are involved)
  • airport pickup
  • learn flying yoga as a bonus
  • wifi, water, tea,…
  • classes with external students are revenue share (60% for you) so you are free to prepare/conduct workshops and advertise them
  • Visa fees are taken care by us (30 day B visa on arrival, $35), with extensions afterwards depending on your stay.

 

Expectations for a volunteer:

Please kindly be aware of our expectations for our volunteers.

  • Set yourself meaningful and realistic objectives for your tenure: improvements, milestones, ability to teach, do do handstands, do lectures on Buddhism,…
  • Impeccable attitude, behavior and speech:
    • Clean/decent yoga/sports clothing (covered shoulder and knees in religious areas)
    • On-time or before-time to all classes, meals, and group activities
    • No alcohol, smoking, drugs on the cottage premises
    • Positive, helpful, problem solving attitude
    • Continue self-practice between classes for self-development: Yoga, meditation, lectures,…
    • Back before 11PM (or sleep outside)
    • Awareness of customers and their physical and spiritual condition, and assist as needed
    • Be impeccable with your speech
  • Two classes to assist or teach daily, more if you’d like to create workshops. One Hata or Vinyasa, and one meditation or lecture. This is something you will discuss with us upon arrival.
  • If you create workshops or classes, review first with teachers and Jan
  • When you post pictures taken in the cottage on social media
    • check with guests if they are comfortable with pictures taken/shared
    • mention Blue Indigo Cottage as the place pictures were taken.
    • Do not post pictures of children/orphans/poor people unless you preview with staff first
  • There are no scheduled days off but you can arrange with other teachers and Jan at least 3 days prior your time off, so there are no disruptions in classes.
  • One month tenure minimum, 6 month maximum

 

Experience needed for a volunteer:

  • Successfully completed a TTC (200 hours)
  • Self-practice for over 2 years
  • Ability to meditate regularly
  • Some experience teaching is best
  • Good spoken English, other languages are a plus (Japanese, French, German, Dutch,…)

  • 2 years professional teaching experience in one of these: Hata, Vinyassa, flying yoga, Ashtanga
  • Good knowledge of Buddhist philosophy, able to lead discussions and lectures
  • Self-practice for over 4 years
  • 2 references from 2 different yoga studios
  • Ability to meditate regularly
  • Good spoken English, other languages are a plus (Japanese, French, German, Dutch,…)
